Rome was blanketed in snow after a rare snowfall hit the Italian capital on Monday morning, with some areas reaching up to 5cm (1.97 inches) in coverage.
The snow came as a surprise to local residents, with reports of schools being closed due to the snow.
Rome has a warm Mediterranean climate, with average temperatures in the winter months averaging around 8 degrees Celsius (46.4 Fahrenheit), making snow a very rare occurrence. The last reports of snow in Rome were in February 2012.
