A proposed plan by FIFA to revamp the Club World Cup will lead to fixture congestion and health concerns for players, according to the Premier League's executive chairman Richard Scudamore. FIFA president Gianni Infantino hopes to expand the current Club World Cup to include at least 12 teams from Europe - something UEFA fear could compete with the Champions League.A report in the New York Times suggested the FIFA Council rejected Infantino's request to push forward with the proposal at last month's meeting in Colombia. After the meeting, Infantino said discussions about the future of FIFA's club competitions would be addressed at the next Council meeting, in Moscow in June. Scudamore, who also serves as head of the World Leagues Forum, has written to Infantino raising his opposition to the proposed 24-team tournament, which is being targeted for the summer of 2021.According to The Times, Scudamore said in the letter: "A new competition in the summer, involving more teams, will bring only greater congestion and health concerns for clubs' players."FIFA itself has highlighted the international match calendar's congestion and lack of rest periods for players most in demand."Scudamore was also highly critical of what he perceives to be a lack of proper consultation with clubs regarding the proposal."To be presented with FIFA's 'solution' as a fait accompli and claim this to be consultation defies all definitions of best practice and good governance," Scudamore added.
